The Case Against Carbohydrates in Dog Food
I could summarize this article in one sentence by saying that dogs' did not evolve to eat grains and other carbohydrates. But I have a feeling you would want know more why this is the case. You might be wondering why then, so many commercial dog foods have them included in their various formulas? This is a good question. This article gives an overview of what you need to know about the relationship between carbs and dog food, and why they should be a minimal part to your dog's diet. First I should give a little history about why they are in food for dogs. Grains first appeared in dog foods about 80 years ago. The reason for their inclusion is two-fold. One reason is that consumers wanted it. They needed more convenience and in a form that came in a bag. The second reason stems from the manufacturers need to cut costs. By utilizing the cheap calories found in these carbohydrate sources they could cut down on their expenses and pass on the savings to consumers. Even today, most foods for dogs utilize this approach. The problem is that using this concept, it overlooks the nutritional fundamentals of enhancing your dog's health. The truth of the matter is that dogs' have no biological requirements for carbohydrates. The body of a canine actually recognizes them as sugar, which can easily convert to fat. Too much of these sugars can lead to a host of problems including hypoglycemia, hyperactivity and diabetes. In several studies it has also been shown to lead to accelerated tumor and cancer growth. Another problem is digestibility. Humans have the necessary digestive enzymes that can break down starches. But dogs' don't have such a luxury. This means that they have a hard time with diets high in carbs. Consequently, they stay in the digestive track longer, causing more energy consumption trying to absorb these foods, and results in bulky and thick stools. The final problem with grains and other starches is that they contain phytates, which block mineral absorption. So a premium food you might already buy that states it is rich in nutrients might not be all it's cracked up to be. If it has a lot of carbohydrates, then it's actually blocking the absorption of beneficial minerals such as calcium, iron and zinc. Grains and other carbs are useful for humans and other animals. But the assumption that they are good for our dogs' is an incorrect one. They slow down the digestion process, cause a host of ailments with continued use, and block essential minerals. The bottom line is that you should read the dog food label carefully and make sure to shop for a low-carb diet to give better overall health for your canine. organic dog food provides detailed information on adult dog food, puppy food, senior dog food, organic dog food and more and is associated with dog food
